Our 1-5 Star Difficulty Rating System

All Koping In The Outback Tag Along tours are graded using a 1-5 star difficulty method. 1 star being the easiest and 5 being most difficult.

  • Our 1-2 star tours are suitable for all skill levels and vehicle capabilities. These tours will include on road driving, offload/dirt road driving, and some high/low range driving. All standard 4x4’s will be capable on of completing these tours.

  • Our 3-4 star tours are easily drivable with some basic 4x4 experience and modifications. You will experience larger amounts of Offroad/dirt road driving and regular high/low range 4x4 tracks. You can expect water crossing, sand, rock and mud driving. 4x4 recoveries may be necessary in some situations.

  • Our 5 star tours are suited to the avid off-roader who wants to test they’re driving and vehicle capabilities. Regular recoveries, sand, mud, ruts, rocks etc can all be expected. Our 5 star tours can be easily completed by cars equip with a few key modifications. See our tours page for further information.

FAQs

I’m a newbie to offload driving/4x4ing, will I be capable of completing a tag along tour?

Absolutely! We are here to help! Our tours cater for all levels of driver and vehicle ability. Our friendly team will help guide you along the way and offer information and advise whenever its required. We’ll strive to educate you on all aspects of off-road driving and touring to ensure you finish our tour filled with confidence. Have a look at our tours graded 1-3/5 stars. If you’ve never been off-road, these will be a suitable starting point for you.

Will the terrain on tour ruin my vehicle?

Although some of our tours traverse Australia’s most unforgiving landscapes, we always take the upmost care to ensure our convoy reaches our destination unscathed. Correct vehicle preparation and careful driving techniques are great preventative measures to ensure you and your vehicle complete the tour. Things happen and components break (tyres, suspension components, battery systems etc), we are here to assist you in the event you do incur a breakdown.

At a minimum, what modifications am I required to make to my vehicle?

Each of our tours are graded from 1-5/5 stars, depending on which tour you’re attending different modification are required. At a minimum your vehicle must have 4x4 and selectable low range (or similar) and tyres with sufficient tread depth (over half tread). Please see our specific tour requirements for a list of all required vehicle modifications.

Are trailers allowed?

We welcome well built (preferably Australian built) trailers on some of our tours. Our tours graded 1-3/5 star are best suited to towing trailers. Please make us aware at the time of booking if you wish to tow your trailer. We aim to group travels towing trailers onto the same tour, this helps us plan/change our itinerary to suit. Please note a surcharge may apply for trailer towing on certain tours.

Are kids welcome?

Most definitely! We don’t discriminate and welcome well behaved kids/families our tours*. We ask that our travelling families respect fellow tour guests and understand this is everyones’ holiday - some travellers may prefer more privacy and down time than others, please respect this. Please make us aware at the time of booking if you wish to bring your family/kids along. We aim to group travels/families with kids onto the same tour so everybody can share common interests.

What happens if our vehicle breaks down?

Our team is extremely well equip and experienced in all aspects of road side running repairs/bush mechanics. Your guides will carry a comprehensive tool and spares kit (please note you are required to carry specific spares to suit your vehicle, see our packing list for more info) and there is a good chance we’ll get you going again. Should your breakdown be more severe/serious we will assist you with a tow truck to the nearest town/service centre. If your car is unable to be fixed in a timely manner to rejoin the tour (major damage), please read over our terms and conditions for more information.

What happens if someone gets injured during a tour?

Our guides are all first aid accredited and willing to assist with any first aid matters. Your lead vehicle will have a comprehensive first aid kit and defibrillator available to use should it be required. For major and life threatening injuries emergency services will be contacted via Satellite phone or Radio coms. We take each injury case by case and act accordingly depending on our level of remoteness and severity of the injury. If you as the individual suffer from a medical condition which may put you or others in danger whilst on tour we ask you read our terms and conditions for further information.

Will there be phone and internet coverage?

Depending on which tour you’re attending, phone and internet coverage may not be available. We travel to many remote regions of the country where mobile service is unavailable. Many remote towns have Telstra service available (other providers may not receive service in locations that Telstra does). For all emergency contact requirements your guide will be carrying a satellite phone and relevant radio comms to make contact should it be required outside of signal areas. Remember you’re on holiday! Take the time to put your mobile away, disconnect and enjoy the very best of mother nature.

How many other people/vehicles can I expect on tour?

The size of our tour numbers vary depending on the tour. We aim to operate tours with 3-10 cars. Commonly our tag along will see 4-7 cars on average. Generally equalling 8 to 12 people. For larger groups you can expect 2-3 guides at minimum to ensure a favourable guide to guest ratio. Our guests experience is paramount! We commonly split larger groups in half to ensure guest satisfaction and smooth running of our tours.

How far will we drive each day?

Our daily driving distances will vary depending on which tour you’re attending. We acknowledge outback travel may be new to our guests. We keep this in mind and ensure our itineraries accommodate all driving and fatigue levels. We aim for no more than 500 kms in a day for our larger distance days. On average you can expect to drive 100-300kms per day. We strive to arrive at camp by a reasonable hour to ensure day light set up of the camp.

What are the benefits of going on a tag along tour?

A Koping In The Outback Tag along tour is a fantastic way to travel Australia in a safe and rewarding manner. On tour you’ll meet like mined travellers and have the back up support of an experienced guide. You’ll gain exclusive access to areas commonly not accessible by the general public and be equip with the knowledge on how to concur certain terrain. Our tag along tours offer peace of mind and a fulfilling journey for all.

What age range are your tours suited to?

Our tours are aimed to suit all ages and demographics. Drivers of tag along Vehicles must hold a relevant Australian licence (or similar) and be willing to drive for consecutive days with up to 500km per day (at most, average of 100-300 per day) 

Our only recommendation is that remote travel may be too strenuous for the infant and elderly. Please chat to our team if you require further information or guidance.

Are pets allowed on tour?

Unfortunately for our 4 legged friends our tours traverse a number of National Parks and non dog/cat friendly locations. It’s best your pets enjoy the comfort of home whist you’re away on tour.

What type of camps will we stay at each night?

When travelling Australia we believe its best to experience a variety of camping options. Most of our tours incorporate camping at Camp grounds, Caravan parks and remote bush camps. We’ve hand picked the very best camp spots for all of our tours! Sometimes you can expect to be extremely remote with no amenities available and other times have a comfort of hot showers and flushing toilets. For us, we believe its all part of the adventure!

I don't own a 4x4, can I still come on tour?

The short answer is yes! Absolutely! We are more than happy to assist you with booking/hiring a suitable 4x4 vehicle. With 4x4 hire available in most of our departure and finish locations, hiring a vehicle is a great alternative! Simply fly into our departure location, collect your vehicle and you’re ready to head on adventure!  We can also supply and/or help source all the relevant camping equipment you may require.

I have limited time off work and don’t want to waste holidays driving to and from a tour departure location. Can you organise transport for my vehicle?

We certainly can! We work closely with a number of trusted freight carriers who can transport your vehicle Australia wide! Simply reach out to us with your desired tour and vehicle location and we will ensure your vehicle arrives on time to the tour departure location!
